Webmaker Content Creation @WUB

World University of Bangladesh, CSE department organized CSE fest where we were invited to do a workshop. It was a great opportunity to have an event there.

Me along with Trisa Islam went to the venue early in the morning and we got more students than we expected!

As I started my intro sessions and about open web, many students said they didn’t have much idea about it. We discussed what is open web and started our main session.

At first I talked about webmaker, what it is and how it works. Following that, Trisa introduced the webmaker app to everyone. It took a little bit time to download the app due to internet. It felt really great when few students made there first app while others were struggling downloading the app.

Trisa showed everyone how to sign up for the app and the basics. After that, I made a basic make and demonstrated it to everyone. Students were given some basic topics but were not bound to follow those specific topics.

We gave the students 20 minutes to make their first make. I personally appreciated each and everyone for making their first make having slow internet. They didn’t give up at all.

The makes they made:

MakerParty @UT

After coming from Mozfest, I was jet lagged for days and was catching up with university and everything else. The event I did after catching up with everything else was, Makerparty at one of the schools of Dhaka : Universal Tutorial.

I conducted the event with other 2 awesome Mozillians, Faria and Trisa. Me and Trisa reached the school early in the morning to set things up. The teachers were very friendly and took us for an intro session with the kids who was interested to join our sessions. I went to class 7-10 and introduced myself and gave a small brief about what we are planning to do for that day. Students seemed very excited.

IMG_0060.jpg

IMG_0061

The computer lab being small, we decided to divide students into 2 groups/sessions. We conducted each session for 1.5-2 hours. Every session consisted of 20-25 students. Their computer and science teachers also joined us to co-operate with them.

IMG_0065.jpg

Our first session started of with an intro session. I gave a small brief of what we are going to do, who are we? what are we doing there? what is Mozilla webmaker and how it can help learning web making from any age.

Then we divided students to groups of 4-5 people each. When some students were busy making makes, others were following them. I gave chance to everyone to learn from others while collaborating. Students who felt shy were given in groups so that they can learn properly.

IMG_0073.jpg

First I talked about the tools of webmaking, especially thimble and x-ray goggles. I asked them if they want to start from the scratch or want to use the templates, they started working on basic templates. After that I showed x-ray goggles. The internet was slow and I could show them in groups. They seemed very much interested and said they will try at their home and make things. They said they will show me next time when I am visiting their school in January.

When I handed them some goodies, they seemed very happy and asked if they can put it on their car! 😛

Followed by the first batch, the second one got in.Me, Faria and trisa took the in-charge of the sessions and Faria helped me very much because she was also another teacher from the school. The teachers helped us very much to do the event in time. they also asked various questions related to mozilla and webmaking. I told them to use this tools when they teach their students HTML, CSS etc . they really liked the tools and said they will use for sure. Students who knew HTML, CSS before a little bit could make some good makes. They really liked thimble and many of them were sitting with pc for more than 20 minutes, not giving others chances 😛

IMG_0074.jpg

The principal is very much interested to do more events in future with us and I also liked how they are teaching their students ICT in digital classrooms because most of the schools of Bangladesh lacks of digital classroom equipment.

Make – A – Thon !!

So basically participating in Make-A-Thon as a Mozilla reps with other reps and mozillians was FUN!

10407937_1498681307072188_7157251183268394405_n

If you are thinking what Make-A-Thon is this link is just for you!

Let me again write it for you in case if you don’t wanna switch tabs. Make-A-Thon is the First-Ever Hardware Hackathon in Bangladesh which is a part of the International MAKE-A-THON series.

Here people got 48 hours to make projects and the event took place from the 18th of November to the 20th during the Global Entrepreneurship week 2014 happening in Dhaka leading to joining an international MakerFest in January 2015.

10171644_1503885193218466_8897659529751552045_n
Tech enthusiasts, developers, makers, designers, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors – all came together and built things with whatever they had around themselves. They came up with affordable, easy to use and relevant solutions for the daily problems around us such as traffic, energy, water, health or education!

What they want to do?
They want to give developers, designers and makers a chance to work on the next generation of technology and create new things and prototypes that can solve the most pressing problems of our time.
They involved the leading technology companies who are providing them with their hardware tool kits such as chips, gadgets and gears which could then be used by the makers, designers and developers to craft new technologies.

What we did?

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Aniruddha hacked Firefox OS and turned devices to piano keys with sensor motion. He used proximity sensor to make the piano with devices. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti musical scales were integrated with devices. If you put your hand or any other object it plays individual sound and the screen changes it color(he used red color) . We demonstrated it to the organizers and people out there. I myself liked the whole system because it was fun but as all of them were developer preview phone it sounded less than normal. It was fun indeed!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We also did networking with some of the organizers, shared our story with them like what mozillians do, how we got involved with Mozilla and Mozilla Bangladesh community, our activities all over the world. We focused on Firefox OS, webmaker, maker parties, fsa  program also. They were really interested to hear our stories and activities and also showed interest to help in future events as organizers, well that is a really good news for us!

I visited different groups to see and know about their projects and it was really fun to know about such amazing projects!

Womaniya – Empowering more WOMEN in Tech(expanding woMoz)

From Ada Lovelace , women have played an important part in driving technology forward…..

I was lucky enough to get the invitation for Womaniya from the woMoz organizer Komal Ji Gandhi from India which took place this 8-9th March in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
On 6th January early in the morning I started for Delhi from Dhaka,Bangladesh and got connected with Bhopal flight. The organizer herself came to the airport to receive me warmly with a local volunteer, Vaibhab Bajaj. We went to our desired hotel and as I was tired so that day was an ‘Off’ for me to take rest. The next day early in the morning both of them came to pick me up to the volunteers stay place. Keeping my luggages we went to many places like meeting with the police AIG for confirming agenda and speakers, picking up womaniya teeshirts etc.
In the evening , I was just surfing around after taking some rest in the garden of the hotel while other mozillians Umesh Agarwal and Jafar Muhammad joined me in the hotel. Soumya Deb joined us later at night and Sumantro mukharjee joined us the next day during we were having our breakfast at hotel.

Day 1 starts:

IMG_7843

Womaniya welcomes us 🙂

As it was the first day of the event and all of our guests were supposed to come there on time we rushed there just after we had our breakfast to just check everything was perfect.
The event started sharp at 10.30. All the chief guests gave their valuable speech about women in the society, their safety, womens’ day celebration etc.

IMG_7856

We, MOZILLIANS started our main event after the lunch. Me and Komal gave brief idea about what woMoz and womaniya is and how it is related to each other. To make the brief talk more interactive we both asked each other about the reason why we are womoz and what inspired us to be a mozillian or contribute to Mozilla as a women.

IMG_7883

Later, Faisal sir explained what mozilla is and how it works.

IMG_7958

IMG_7911

The crowd!

IMG_7931

Day 2 starts:
The next day we volunteers woke up early just to be before time to make sure that everything is going to be perfect. At 10.30 people started coming. We were amused to see that at least 70% people from the previous day joined us. “Passionate” – I MUST SAY!
Once they started taking place, we started with our first session(s). People were divided into small groups. FSA, APP DEV and Webmaker. Me, along with Umesh took the responsibility of FSA team.

IMG_8248

IMG_8435

Deb was incharge of App Dev and Sumantro, along with me again in Webmaker. Komal helped all the volunteers during the sessions.
Faisal sir took an awesome session on l10n. Later on stage Deb showed app development.

IMG_8502

Following him, Faisal sir took Mozquiz. We also helped him with making questions on the spot! People were called on the stage and were given away cool swags by Pawan sir.

IMG_8531

Before wrapping up the event I ended up with my session. I explained what woMoz is, why we need more woMoz, the mission of Mozilla, how and who can contribute with us, how to get over from the restrictions, how to shine in life in tech as women etc. People seemed much energetic till the event ended. They were responsive during my session as well. After wrapping up with the event some girls seemed interested to join the winning team of woMoz and were very much impressed with my session.

IMG_8535

People taking swags, closing the event. They loved ’em

A MUST group photo!

To be honest I am now missing Bhopal because every part of the city I visited during the event and free time, has given me such pleasure of travelling.

Slides I used to speak out through my session .

A day with SUMO stars

The awesome NSU FSAs were thinking of doing one event where they could do mentoring on SUMO , yes Support Mozilla it is! After 2 weeks planning the event took place at North South University library.

on 3rd March, 2014 the event started sharp at 1 pm in the library. People were divided into small groups for better communication and learnt different types of sumo contribution ways. They also signed up for the FSA program. Our main target was teaching L10n (Localization) (sumo kb) and AOA (Army Of Awesome) .

Zarif took the responsibility to teach AOA as well as doing AOA by himself on that day.

wp_20140303_13_27_25_pro-1

Faria teaching a new FSA sumo kb l10n .

wp_20140303_13_26_13_pro

While I was explaining Al-amin how those sumo badges are given away and whom are given away. We also answered few questions on the support forum .

wp_20140303_14_49_43_pro-1

While newbies were busy doing contribution, FSAs also did not waste their time.

wp_20140303_14_52_30_pro-1

WoMoz l10n! I was really amazed to see that newbies completed articles l10n without any break. Later we helped to fix typos.

We have a plan to write articles soon after we do good in this area.

wp_20140303_15_12_14_pro-1

After the sumo worktime we had our lunch at 4pm. Some people are missing due to their class/ exam!

wp_20140303_15_57_21_pro-1

That is how we ended up with our small event. We have planned to do more productive events online+offline both regarding SuMo.

Providing localized support has always been one of the core purposes of SUMO and I personally think SuMo is the best way to start contributing for a newbie and that’s why this areas has been chosen by the FSA team who worked hard to revise the localized kb . A special thanks to the team!

Mozilla Bangladesh Task Force Meetup 2014

Mozilla Bangladesh recently organized an event named “Mozilla Bangladesh Task Force Meetup and 2014 planning”. Mozilla Bangladesh community has grown 10 times in last couple of years. To better organize the community MozBD formed Task Force based on projects. This event was the first formal meetup and to plan 2014 and many other activities.

On Saturday, 22nd February, 2014, the day long event took place and the venue was Hotel 71.
I reached on the spot with excitement because on the day we were about to plan awesome events for 2014. I was just memorizing the events I planned/we some mozillians planned. I was making it sure that no event idea should be missed.
12698942155_142bcd2978_b
Around 10.00 am the main event started with an ice-breaking session, where each of the mozillian had to say their name and do something funny like hand waving, face making etc. After that our main agenda started(Moz Foundation 2014 Goals)

Grow 10x , 1M

12699438384_004e6f4856_b

Some core points we had discussions on  were: Australis Launch, Firefox OS, FxOS apps workshop in universities etc. During the discussions we were served with Morning tea and biscuits. Following this, we had S.W.O.T analysis. Each task force were given around one hour to devide into groups and have discussion. This analysis has a great impact on our future activities. After the analysis we wrote points in stickies and later some volunteers of specific TF wrote them on the ethar and the main discussion started. All the TF explained their priority points while other TF gave suggestions/info/asked questions.

We had lunch after finishing the session. we went to 19th floor to have yummy lunch. I couldn’t eat much but some enjoyed the food very much.

12699287993_1d889565f4_b

Later, we went to the terrace and got MozBD teeshirts. Everyone seemed excited to have brand new tee shirt and later we had fun captures and group photos.

12698977965_a99c8c8621_b

The second half started with the presentation “Million Mozillians” by Mahay Alam Khan. We had a talk on MozStumbler,MozillaBD blog, website, gave new ideas. Later, we discussed 2014 road map/event plans. It was a pretty interactive session where I gave some inputs(yes, those memorized events).Other mozillians also suggested event types at new locations.

Wrapping up everything we did some photo sessions along with new mozillians,TF members, reps and WoMoz. Had a very qualityful day with some bainstorming ideas and thoughts to keep up our good work through contribution towards Mozilla.
